Anonymous asked: Where have you gotten your Vallhunds? I can't believe you have more then one! I want a little boy Vallhund so bad! The breeders we got our current puppy from are no longer breeding Vallhunds and we are having a heck of time finding a place that doesn't make you sign a contract that you will show the dogs! We don't want to do that, we just love these little Viking dogs for their awesomeness!! And I don't want my little Freya to be lonely while we are at work :(
We got Fenris from Osafin, a breeder here in Austin. Her only stipulation re:showing was that if we were to show/breed him, she got to be involved. If we weren’t going to show/breed him, then he had to be neutered by a specified age. Rocky was a “happy accident”. We didn’t necessarily want a 3rd dog, but Fenris’s breeder contacted us about him. Apparently he was placed badly by a breeder in Houston and needed a new home, so we got him.
Both of the breeders were totally fine with the dogs being pets only. Most dogs from a litter aren’t going to be optimal show dogs (temperament, etc), so it’s weird/irresponsible* to me that the breeders you’re talking to are pushing for all the pups to be shown. But anyway, maybe talk to Freya’s breeder about recommendations or go through the SVCA breeder list and research their operations/dogs. I hope that helps!
*In fact, that even violates the rules of the SVCA (#25), since there’s no way every pup in a litter is show quality.
Most breeders that I’ve talked to are anti show homes and will only let dogs go as companion puppies with an alteration contract and limited registration.
If you’re really serious about looking into getting another puppy I know a couple breeders that are going to be having litters in the next couple months that are AKC certified breeders of merit that would be more than happy having puppies in pet homes.
