Xiu Xiu suddenly became afraid of our car and big plastic/paper bags. One time she was sleeping calmly on her couch until she noticed a paper bag behind her. I never saw my dog jump so high. Today she started to panic when we walked nearby our car. It’s especially strange since she was always ok with it before. Nothing bad happened with her in it. The same thing with plastic bags. We never tried to do something as dumb as putting a plastic bag on her or something like this.Any thoughts?

This happened to Fenris when he was younger, but I think he was several months younger than Xiu Xiu at the time. I know that puppies go through a couple fear stages, the last one being around maybe 6-12 months. Sounds like that’s what’s going on: http://www.houstonspca.org/site/DocServer/developmental_stages_of_puppy_behavior.pdf?docID=369 We used a lot of praise and treats to help him get through it.
P.S. Fenris also suddenly became terrified of parked cars. It was kind of a pain on the ass…

This happened to Nea too, she became afraid of linoleum floors. Anytime she’d walk across something smooth she’d stop, go stiff, pull her nails out to try and get a grip, fail, pull her nails out more until she was basically walking on her them until she’d completely slip and land spread eagle on the floor.
She’d do this every time we’d go to the pet store, the first time I freaked out so badly I thought she was having a Seizure and almost took her too the vet.
It did lessen though, with continued exposure and reassurance. When we’d go to the store I’d let her lead me around and any time she’d start to stiffen up we’d stop and I’d give her lots of praise and then we’d keep going. She hasn’t had an episode in several months.
So ya, lots of praise and patience and Xiu Xiu will overcome it.
Good luck!
